Hollyhocks is situated within the historic market town of Alnwick and is an ideal base for exploring. The picturesque Northumbrian town is dominated by the medieval castle, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland.
The Alnwick Garden at Alnwick Castle is one of the most magnificient in Europe Based on the movement of water with special areas for the blind and disabled. This fascinating garden covers 12 acres and plays host to the largest treehouse in Europe.
During the summer Alnwick hosts several interesting events including the International Music Festival held the first week in August.
Barter Books, one of the largest second-hand bookshops in Britain, is based at the listed Victorian railway station. Sample local produce, the famous Lindisfarne Mead, Craster kippers, speciality cheeses and honey.
The area is very central for visiting the National Park, Cheviot Hills, National Trust and English Heritage properties, Holy Island, the Farne Islands, the Heritage Coast and many more varied places of interest.
Although in the midst of Northumberland's countryside, Newcastle Upon Tyne is within 45 minutes by car, where you can visit the famous MetroCentre and Eldon Square, both with excellent shopping facilities. Edinburgh centre is easily reached by train from Alnmouth or Berwick upon Tweed.
